I've gotten to the bottom tram station and killed all the soldiers and
climbed all the ladders and pushed all the buttons. There is one door
that doesn't show a hand and doesn't open. Evidently I have to get
through that door to make my way into the town. I'm really stuck. Any
help out there?

You mean you've just escaped from the castle and took the "cable tram"
down into town?

Well, as far as I remember, in that cable tram station there's a cage
inside of which there are the engines that drive the cable tram. There's
a ladder leading to the top of that cage. When on top, turn left. There
should be a ventilation shaft, protected by a grill or fence. Kick it
and crouch inside to get downstairs.

I've now progressed quite a way and am stuck again. Now I'm in a
small stone room with a hole in the floor. The Nazi's are trapped
below. I cannot get out of the room. If I jump through the hole I die.
If I try to dynamite my way out or use dynamite or grenades at all, I
die. There is a stone sarcophagus in the room but I can't do anything
with that, either. I'm going to send you an email from my ISP and
hope you will contact me that way. Thank you in advance for your time
and attention in this trivial matter.

If I got you right you're now at the beginning of the Catacomb level.
Your way back is blocked by kinda rockslide and down below there are
soldiers waiting for the attack of the zombies. Unfortunately you must
jump down that hole to continue. But first you should let the zombies
attack the soldiers while you fight them from above. If you have some
grenades left you could toss them because they are the best means
against those "war zombies" that have a shield. Afterwards eliminate the
remaining soldiers, if there are any. Then jump down.

Anyway, when jumping down you shouldn't die (I just tried it and I
didn't even lose a single health point). Maybe your health level is too low?
